Jared and Kat | Engagement Shoot | Puerto Rico

Oh where do I begin with these amazing creatures.

I have been friends with Jared since I was 16. He is the most talented human.. Like so much talent I just cant. He looks at light and shadows and angles and scenes unlike anyone else I’ve ever met. Totally makes me want to push my work further and further. He’s my most favorite person to work with ever!!! side note- he is also a complete insane freak of nature.

check out his work here : https://vimeo.com/jaredfadel

When I first met Kat (whom Jared calls Bambi…haha) I thought:

A. Shes a tiny beautiful creature

B. Her and Jared would make beautiful babies if they got married

C. She’s so weird omg she’s perfect for Jared hahaha

So Jared and Kat asked me to come with them to Puerto Rico to shoot their engagements and bridals. I died and then came back to life and then said YES.

So I brought along my best friend Makell who also has known Jared since high school and who did Kats gorgeous hair and makeup!

We just had a great big insane photoshoot vacation/ friend time and cried laughing every second, ate the most amazing puerto rico food, adventured around the whole island through Old San Juan and the Rainforrest, Salsa danced and ate more amazing food, sweated to death, slept on the most uncomfortable wood bed of all time, ran around the streets at night, almost got killed in a scary part of town,  jumped off waterfalls, and took pictures everywhere that was beautiful which was everywhere. It was possibly the best trip ever.  Tears forever and all the organisms….

I am going to split this shoot up into two blog posts because there are so many pictures!!! this first one is the engagements! enjoy.

As of Late with Maskcara | Beauty Photography | Jessica Janae

Shooting for Maskcara is one of my most favorite things in the world. I started shooting her a couple years back and it has just grown into an incredible thing. She’s one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. No lie. Ever. Love her and her cute family so much I could just scream. She’s so unique because she’s insanely successful and yet you’d never know it because she’s chill and down to earth and the lowest maintenance human who loves everyone she meets.

I use her makeup every day. I die at how brilliant she is. Every shoot we do is so much fun. Just so much love over here right now ahhh!!!!!

These are my faves from some past shoots that we’ve done together in SLC and in St. George, Utah.

ENJOY!!

Jessica Janae Photography | Monday Tip | City Locations and Lighting

Hey everyone! Today’s tip is about shooting outdoors on location.

When I am shooting on location, especially in the city I focus on finding the light and then placing my subjects in it. instead of thinking about the subject and background first I look around and find the best pockets of light around the spot we’re at. And light streak on the ground, across the wall or through the trees i take note of and then throw my subject right in.

Don’t be afraid of shooting in direct sunlight or even side light like in the video, as long as you expose for their skin it will turn out amazing! Once get over the fear of shooting in direct sunlight front or back lit it will change your photography. Light gives your pictures a magical vibe you can get in no other way. Get out of the safe shadows. Especially in city type locations when you want it to look cool and edgy. Shade will just make it look blah if you stay there the entire time!

As always let us know what you think! Please comment below with any future video ideas, things you want to learn in the future, and questions!!

Jessica Janae Photography Monday Tip | Lightroom Basics

Supppp y’all. For today’s backstage pass vid I’m gonna show you how I flow through my shoots in Lightroom. Sorting files and then making presets. Everyone asks me what presets I use, the pack I bought and love to use is VSCO. Best ever. But mainly I use my own presets. I’ve made soooo many of them it’s like 5 packs right there. I’ve held onto them for a long time cuz I think they give me a specific look that’s a little different but I’m gonna let hem loose on the world soon and sell them cuz they’re rad. So be watching out for the announcement for that!

Anyways I hope this is helpful for your newer Lightroom users! Thanks for watching!

Jessica Janae Continuous light | Light for Sale | Tutorial

Hey guys! So for todays tutorial I wanted to show you a little continuous light that I have used for some time now for shoots that we will now be selling in our store!

They’re slim and small can fit in all my camera bags but give off so much light! I mainly like to use them for receptions during the first dance and the big group dancing! I have also used them when its super dark in my studio to make a beauty dish look on the models face. For weddings I will stand it on a table or ledge of some sort and get backlit shots as well as front lit. Sometimes I put one on a table behind the couple and then hold one in my hand to get the front of the couple which makes a very pretty look for the first dance! Anyways these lights are super fun to play with and a great thing to have at every reception cuz you never know what lighting you’re gonna run into!

We are selling them for $30 in the store! xoxo

She can shoot film at any shoot if you request it and you will not regret it, it always looks flawless. On top of being extremely talented she is also the most hilarious person on earth. She cracks up every client and makes everyone feel relaxed because she’s so chill!

Hey guys Time for another backstage pass video! Wahoo ! So for this week we decided that I should probably start using my Twitter account that I’ve had for ever and used like twice ha ha. So I started the account up again and asked everybody to go onto Twitter and ask me whatever questions they wanted personal or about business. Then Dayna had The bright idea to try and make cookies with my babies while answering these questions.. Oh bless it you should have seen just the preparation for this. There was flour covering the kitchen and a broken egg before it even began!
These are my absolute favorite cookies in the world that my mom made for us while growing up. They are soft and chewy gingersnaps from heaven. We will post the recipe at the end for you!

Monday Tip| Editing Time Lapse | Jessica Janae

Hey guys! So this week for Monday’s tip, I wanted to give a little peek of what my editing process looks like, for beauty shots in particular. This was for a shoot with Maskcara Cosmetics about a month ago for her makeup line! Do yourself a favor and go check it out.

The model, Madison, is already so perfectly stunning that I thought she’d be fab for this video. Because she obviously doesn’t need anything done to her. She one of the prettiest people I’ve ever seen. So I had to exaggerate this editing video for the purpose of showing you guys what can be done, not because she needs it! In reality I’d actually probably do a tiny bit less than what I did!

So this type if edit is what I do for close up beauty shots, close up fashion shots and close up bridal shots. When the picture is more full body the editing is less extensive on the face. Also, this editing process is what I do for photos that will be published online, and printed for receptions or portfolios etc. If the picture will be in print for a magazine I will do a much longer process with the skin.

So for the smoothing of the skin I use spot healing brush, healing brush and the dodge tool. I dont use gaussian blur or any other type of blur. Thats my biggest tip is to not just blur over the entire skin surface.

Next month I will be selling editing tutorial videos on my website! I did an editing seminar which was awesome but there were so many people out of state that couldn’t come that I thought videos would be so much easier for everyone to access!

I will also be selling my light room presets along with the videos so you can follow along!

Anyways, I love sped up editing videos and have wanted to do one for a while now cuz you always end up shocked in the end haha.

I hope you guys enjoyed it! Leave a comment below and let me know what you guys would like to see for these Monday Tips! I’m excited about these videos and have a lot of them planned that I’m excited to share with you!!!

xoxo

Top 6 couple poses I do every time | Jessica Janae Monday Tip

For todays tip I wanted to share a little tidbit that I shared at my “Posing and Interacting with your Clients” Seminar last year!

The top 6 poses that I do almost every single time I shoot a couple!

They’re fool proof, you can do lots of variations of each, and they work on couples that are the same height and super different heights. And each couple is unique so each pose will look different every single time!

1. Traditional announcement pose. Every couple needs the traditional smiling shot with the girls hand on the boys chest. If you don’t get this the parents will come after you! haha

2. The wrap pose! The girl in front and the guy wrapping his arms around her from behind. Have him wrap his arms around her right above or on her chest, trust me its not as weird as it sounds. Just as long as his hands aren’t on her lower stomach cuz it could look like she’s pregnant ! haha They can both look at the camera, then the girl looking down and guy looking at you, guy kissing her neck etc etc etc.

3. The hand kiss! I love doing this cheesy pose. It always makes the couples laugh and is so sweet.

10 couples poses | Jessica Janae | top wedding photographer

CO1A27964. the “Tilt the chin up” pose. This one is always just swoon worthy. Have the boy tilt the girls chin up with his fingers and get in super close for a kiss. You can capture the boys face looking down at the girl and its a killer every time!

5. The Spin pose! Toward the end of every shoot I have the couple do some sort of spin or dance or lift etc. Just have the guy grab her and swiftly spin her around. They cant help but smile and the girls hair always flies and its just magic!

6. The forehead kiss. The moms always love these shots haha. I always try to capture the light in between their faces to add another element to the picture, to make it dreamy…. Have your couple get close and snuggly and the both close their eyes, the girl needs to tilt her head down a bit, then the guy goes in slowly to kiss her forehead. Sometimes the “before kiss” is my favorite part.

So thats it for now! hope that gave you guys some ideas to do every couples shoot! Right now we are actually in the process of planning our next seminar which will have a lot to do with posting and interacting. its gonna be a good one so look forward to info on that!!
