Jessica Janae Photography | Monday Tip | City Locations and Lighting

Hey everyone! Today’s tip is about shooting outdoors on location.

When I am shooting on location, especially in the city I focus on finding the light and then placing my subjects in it. instead of thinking about the subject and background first I look around and find the best pockets of light around the spot we’re at. And light streak on the ground, across the wall or through the trees i take note of and then throw my subject right in.

Don’t be afraid of shooting in direct sunlight or even side light like in the video, as long as you expose for their skin it will turn out amazing! Once get over the fear of shooting in direct sunlight front or back lit it will change your photography. Light gives your pictures a magical vibe you can get in no other way. Get out of the safe shadows. Especially in city type locations when you want it to look cool and edgy. Shade will just make it look blah if you stay there the entire time!

As always let us know what you think! Please comment below with any future video ideas, things you want to learn in the future, and questions!!

Jessica Janae Photography | Backstage Pass | Day of the Dead Halloween Shoot

Hey yo everyone!!! This weeks backstage pass video is of our rad Halloween shoot from a few weeks back! We collaborated with so many amazing people (all listed below), and all threw our ideas into the pot to make a different sort of Day of the Dead shoot! Complete with a dead skeleton girl who has come back to haunt and slowly suck the soul of the “other woman” who has married her husband, is a witch and was behind her murder. Atleast that’s what I think the shoot was about hahahah. Sometimes I just gotta make up a story to get the flow going.

We shot this at the SLC cemetery, starting right before nightfall. It was a tad bit terrifying once the sun was completely down. We found the creepiest spot in the whole place under some old trees with crumbling gravestones. There were some people visiting the cemetery and joggers going by who were probably horrified seeing some witch on a hill standing over a table with candles and a cauldron hahaha.

Halloween has been my favorite holiday my entire life and I’ve never once done a Halloween shoot. No idea how thats even happened. Be looking forward to the reveal of these pics in a few days. Xoxo happy Halloween

Jessica Janae Photography | Backstage Pass | Family Shoot

Hey guys!! This week I wanted to just you take along on a family shoot I did recently so you can see what the little daily shoots look like! We haven’t done just a behind the scenes video of a shoot in a while so I thought it would be kewl whip. This shoot was at Antelope Island with the most stunning family. The sky was super moody that day which I have actually been loving lately.

A regular family shoot goes like this: right after the family books we start chatting about locations. a few weeks later I have them send me the outfits they’re thinking of wearing and I give suggestions. One week before we finalize the exact time and spot to meet. The day of I usually get multiple texts from the mom stressing and confirming everything and asking about her outfit haha. I arrive to the shoot and meet the fam. I always chat with the kids for a while. I learn their names and ages and just walk along with them getting them super comfy with me. And then the shooting chasing madness  begins! Family shoots with kids usually last an hour tops. These kids were awesome and hung in there for almost an hour and a half! We shot right up until it was completely dark. The sun was bright red… You can even shoot after dark the trick is you face your subject where the sun just went down and raise that ISO!

Leave us a comment below and tell us what you think, let us know if you have questions, or give suggestions for future videos and let us know what you want to see next!!!!

Little Unicorn | Salt Lake City, Utah | Jessica Janae fashion shoot

Oh bless Little Unicorn. My good grief their stuff is amazing. They have an awesome team of people who are super talented and super kind. All their patterns you see were hand painted by the girls on their team. They’re different than any other baby blankets I’ve seen. Such gorgeous patterns and the softest of all time. of all time haha.  Me and my husband love them and want a huge kind size quilt !!!

So this shoot happened over a few days. Starting at my studio. It was a crazy day of moms and toddlers and newborns and all sorts of kid madness! Which I actually love because I absolutely love babies and I love shooting movement, which kids are doing every minute of every shoot, so, bam. haha…

I used my own kids for a few pieces and shot them just playing in my parents backyard. I handed them a few things and let them run around and play for an hour chasing them and trying to capture real life feel. So hopefully you all can feel that realness.

Anyways I hope you all enjoy! check out little unicorn here –

Jessica Janae Photography Monday Tip | Lightroom Basics

Supppp y’all. For today’s backstage pass vid I’m gonna show you how I flow through my shoots in Lightroom. Sorting files and then making presets. Everyone asks me what presets I use, the pack I bought and love to use is VSCO. Best ever. But mainly I use my own presets. I’ve made soooo many of them it’s like 5 packs right there. I’ve held onto them for a long time cuz I think they give me a specific look that’s a little different but I’m gonna let hem loose on the world soon and sell them cuz they’re rad. So be watching out for the announcement for that!

Anyways I hope this is helpful for your newer Lightroom users! Thanks for watching!
